Oak Flooring

Fitting a Solid Oak floor.

Timber is a natural living product, so it is important to take care about how you treat and lay your floors to give a long lasting, problem free and pleasing appearance at the end of the day. We are here to help with free advice on how to fit your floor but if in doubt use a professional with flooring experience.

1. Oak floors can be fitted to or over an existing timber floor but if possible the boards should be laid in the opposite direction to the existing floor.
2. Floors can be laid on joists with the end joints of the boards glued with a PVA adhesive. This will allow the joint to span the joists producing very little waste. Remember also to make sure that you stagger your joints on the next row of boards you lay. Joists must be at no more than 400mm centres.
3. Always make sure that on any floor there is no risk of damp entering the underside of the boards. Timber will absorb moisture and then cause your boards to cup or swell.
4. Preferably 12 to 15mm of gap should be allowed around the perimeter of your room to allow for movement of your timber floor. A skirting will cover this gap.
5. Plywood sub floors can be fitted onto concrete screeded floors to give a good base for your oak floor to be installed upon.
   Alternatively ELASTILON can be used to fit our oak flooring onto solid floors. ELASTILON is supplied in 1.00 mtr wide rolls and is simply rolled out onto your solid floor and your oak flooring is then laid on top.This saves on the use of adhesives and it is up to 70% quicker to lay your floor and has extremely good sound proofing properties.    With all solid floors that you are about to lay your flooring onto, ALWAYS make sure your solid floors are completely dry with a moisture below 5%.

6. A porta nailer is a useful tool that can be hired from most tool hire centres for secretly nailing your floor through the tongue. With this tool no fixings will then show and the boards will be kept tightly formed together as you lay your floor.
7. Your floor will arrive boxed and protected from moisture while in its box.
